ESA contribution and income based..
« on: 27 May 2012 11:12PM »
I had an eye test yesterday. I was forced to pay because my IB migration put me on both. The optician wouldnt allow it to be free because it isnt all income based. I dont understand why i was migrated to contribution based when i havent worked at all in almost 5 years - CAB told me it would be income based and things free on IS would be on ESA. Im due to go on holiday to England next month for a week and must get my meds everyday (i dont pay where i am) - 21 prescriptions to pay for. There is no way i can pay, or get a low income form sorted by then and i cant get my gp to stop daily meds. Could the optician be wrong?

That's odd. On the NHS website, (I'll find it later when I'm not so tired) it just says "you must be receiving income based ESA". No mention of "only income based ESA".

See pages 17/ 18/ 19 of this:-
http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/HealthCosts/Documents/HealthCosts/HC11.pdf

for information about free prescriptions for people on IS/ Income-based ESA.

There's information on other pages about opticians, dentists, travel for medical appointments/ treatment and other medical costs.

Becca
the optician is wrong as even 1p of income based benefit gets you free NHS treatment,  If you need to (I don't think you should though) complete an HC1 form & reclaim the cost that you have been wrongly charged

As Sophie pointed out its a HC5 not the HC1  >tah<

Monic - the HC5 is the one you use to claim back charges.
